The Chibi's way of expressing emotion
While emotion is a very important part of any story, the Chibi style of emotion is quite unique. Even a Chibi who was very angry or sad is still cute! Let's take a look at some different emotions, shall we?
Happiness
Gee, doesn't this guy look happy? Not as happy as the cute little Chibi in the cell next to him! The "tell-tale" signs of Chibi happiness are easy to see: wide eyes, a big triangle-smile and a cute action. In fact, sometimes the action isn't even needed. While at times it can take deep research to even tell if someone's truly happy, a Chibi can show this expression so well that it could be spotted a mile away! |
Sadness
I find it rather unfortunate that it's much easier to tell when someone's sad than when someone's happy. Of course, it's a lot easier to tell when a Chibi's sad than when anyone else is. It's common for a sad Chibi to burst out in tears, but the saddest moment is when a Chibi is just about to cry. As you can see from the example, the Chibi's cheeks redden and the iris and pupils grow, rather than the complete eye. Even though the Chibis in this example are not human, they still have feelings, and due to the loss of ice cream, those feelings are hurt. |
Anger
Now, one of the easiest emotions to spot - Anger! This is easily noted in both the angry man on the left, and Dragon Half's evil-looking Princess Vina on the right. When a Chibi is angry, the eyes seem to shrink as the top eyelids lower and slant. It is not uncommon for the face to turn red or for steam to fly from the ears. And on the subject of the face, teeth are almost always bared. In fact, depending on the level of anger, the entire background may become a wall of fire! |
In Love
It can be very, very confusing trying to decide what love exactly IS in the human world. Thankfully, it's displayed in a much clearer context in Chibi form. When a Chibi character is in love, he/she blushes a lot, their eyes grow, they're a lot happier and sometimes their eyes even become pink hearts (I find this really cute!). Background changes involve hearts, roses, a montage of the character he/she has fallen in love with, or a combination of these three. While love to humans can mean anything from dating to a more, umm... sensual relationship, Chibis stick strictly to the cutesy factor. How nice ^.^
Oh, and please, PLEASE don't ask me what "You're my lobster" is supposed to mean... |
